Liverpool owners FSG in talks over minority sale as £1.35bn offer emerges

Liverpool owners, Fenway Sports Group (FSG), are in talks over the sale of a minority stake to a consortium led by businessman Amit Bhatia, according to The Guardian.

Discussions have reportedly been taking place for around three months, with the group believed to have offered about £1.35 billion for a 30% share in Liverpool.

If completed, the deal would value Liverpool at around £4.5bn.

FSG confirmed that negotiations are underway, saying a consortium managed by Bhatia has expressed interest in making a minority investment in the club.

While no agreement has been reached, the negotiations suggest Liverpool’s owners are open to bringing in new financial partners without giving up full control.

Bhatia is well known in English football through his long association with Queens Park Rangers.

He invested in the Championship club in 2007 and spent nearly two decades serving in various leadership roles.

Earlier this week, he stepped down from the club’s board, a move that has strengthened expectations that he is preparing for a major investment elsewhere.

The consortium is also backed by Lakshmi Mittal, Bhatia’s father-in-law and one of the world’s wealthiest industrialists.

With an estimated fortune of around £23bn, Mittal’s financial backing means the group has the resources to complete a deal of this size.

There has been a remarkable growth in Liverpool’s value since FSG bought the club for £300 million in 2010.

Under their leadership, the Reds have returned to the top of English and European football, winning every major title while also expanding commercial revenue and improving facilities.

While some industry experts believe the reported £4.5bn valuation is ambitious, recent Premier League investment deals suggest it is not out of line with the current market.

Chelsea’s takeover in 2022 and Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s purchase of a 25% stake in Manchester United both reflected the growing value of elite English clubs.

Liverpool are currently in the United States for their pre-season tour ahead of the 2026/27 campaign, which begins with a friendly against Sunderland in Nashville.
