The San Diego Padres have recently been one of the more talked-about teams for the 2026 MLB trade deadline on August 3, and it's not been about being deadline buyers like years prior.

Instead, Mason Miller's name has been coming up as someone whom the Padres could trade away for a haul this summer. Such a trade would obviously be a bummer for the Padres fan base, as losing the best closer in baseball would be terrible.

However, according to USA Today's Bob Nightengale, the Padres are reportedly "likely" to keep Miller through the trade deadline, giving Padres fans some good news just over a week until the deadline.

"The San Diego Padres likely will keep closer Mason Miller but could trade starter Michael King, according to rival executives who have spoken to AJ Preller, president of baseball operations," Nightengale writes.

This is a very noteworthy update for a few reasons. Obviously, the Padres being open to trading Michael King is a big note, but the Miller trade update is far more important.

Despite the rumors about Miller being potentially on the move, ramping up in the last few weeks, the Padres aren't expected to deal Miller this summer.

He has a 0.84 ERA this season with 2.5 bWAR, and an NL-best 26 saves with 79 strikeouts across 42.2 innings pitched in 41 outings for the Padres.

Miller is under club control through the 2029 season and would easily be the best pitcher available at the MLB trade deadline if he were to be made available.

While there is still a chance Miller is traded if a desperate team comes and offers something impossible to refuse, for now, it looks like Miller will stay in San Diego for the remainder of the 2026 season, and potentially beyond.
