Mayfield's Fernie Corona voted best Las Cruces-area boys athlete in 2025-26 season

Readers have voted Mayfield boys basketball's Fernie Corona as the best Las Cruces-area boys high school athlete from the 2025-26 season.

Corona was among 25 nominees from Las Cruces, Mayfield, Organ Mountain, Centennial, Mesilla Valley Christian, and Gadsden across football, basketball, soccer, track and field, wrestling, baseball, tennis, powerlifting, and golf. He earned 45.7% of the vote and collected 17,123 total votes. The poll ran from June 16-30.

Las Cruces boys basketball's Jayden Brisby finished second in the voting at 9,642 votes, and Las Cruces football's Denton Walter finished third with 8,123 votes.

Corona, a senior who plays both point guard and shooting guard, qualified for the poll by being named the Defensive Player of the Year in the 2025-26 Las Cruces Sun-News Boys Basketball Super Team. He was a leading player for the Trojans, averaging 15.3 points per game. Corona tallied 61 steals across Mayfield's 28 games and was named an All-District 3-5A selection. He also averaged 4.8 rebounds and 1.5 assists per game.

Corona scored double-digit points in all but three of his games during the 2025-26 season and shot 45% from the field. He scored a season-high 25 points twice: against Clovis on Dec. 12 and against Organ Mountain on Feb. 3.
