Michael Kay backtracks after sparking Anthony Volpe rumor

Michael Kay is backtracking after sparking a salacious Anthony Volpe rumor.

Kay initially said the Yankees asked Volpe to play some second base in the minor leagues and he declined.

“No, I’m a shortstop,” Kay quoted Volpe as saying during Tuesday’s episode of “The Michael Kay Show."

“That’s not a good look, if it happened,” Kay added.

On Wednesday, Kay took to social media to backtrack on his comments.

“I spoke of a rumor yesterday on TMKS that Anthony Volpe would not play 2B in the minors. Sounded unlike him, so I checked further today and there is absolutely no truth to it whatsoever. He never refused to work at second. Will speak more of it today at 1 pm @ESPNNewYork"

Volpe returned to the minors in May 2026 for a Triple-A assignment with the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders while coming back from shoulder surgery.

He made his season debut May 13 in Baltimore after José Caballero suffered a broken right middle finger on May 10.

Caballero has started the first two games of the series against the Tampa Bay Rays. He hit two homers and had four RBI in Monday’s win but went hitless with four strikeouts, including one where he dropped his bat before the ball crossed home plate, on Tuesday.

For the season, Caballero is batting .245 with a .701 OPS along with 10 homer sand 33 RBIs. He has eight errors in 75 games.

Volpe is batting .240 with a .663 OPS with one homer and 13 RBI. Defensively, he has three errors in 41 games after committing 19 in 153 last year.

Yankees manager Aaron Boone wouldn’t commit to Caballero as his starting shortstop after Monday’s game.

“Just, you know, day by day,” Boone told reporters of the shortstop position. “You know, in fairness, he’s been in there a lot more days where I’ve scratched and something’s come up to where I’ve had to move.

“But his versatility [is] so valuable, too, especially with what we’re going through as a team right now with some guys down. He’s a gamer and a big-time player for us.”
