Michigan basketball coach Dusty May once did yardwork for Indiana coach Bob Knight at wife's request

College basketball student managers have a glamorous life — washing jerseys, corralling wayward basketballs, vacuuming the locker room, anticipating a coach's whims, etc.

And, in the case of Dusty May, yard work.

The Michigan coach joined the "Dan Patrick Show" on Tuesday morning, working on about one hour's sleep after winning the national championship with a 69-63 victory over UConn.

May was an Indiana basketball student manager for coach Bob Knight's final four seasons from 1996-2000.

In one instance, May perhaps thought he would get a break from student manager grind as Knight was out of town on a hunting trip.

But Knight's wife, Karen, called. She had had some trees removed from the property and wanted the evidence to disappear.

"We got a call from Karen, a couple of us were subpoenaed to come down to the house. We had no idea what for," May said.

"We got out to the house and she had had several trees removed all the way down to the stump or to the ground. We had to figure out a way to get any of the sawdust and any residue from the trees out of the yard before coach Knight returned."

May also said Knight had a frequent unusual beverage request: Dr Pepper and chocolate milk.

"Coach Knight was ahead of his time in many respects, with analytics and teaching pedagogy. A soda taste with a chocolate milk flavor. It was ingenious."
