Brooklyn Nets guard Mikel Brown Jr. has always been an excellent offensive player with a vast skill set that makes him a dangerous matchup for anyone. Despite his impact on the offensive end, Brown does have some weaknesses in his game.
One of those weaknesses is his play on the defensive side of the game. He is not the biggest of players, so he is not the prototypical two-way player. However, he can turn it up defensively when he is motivated.
Mikel Brown Jr. hits back at critics for calling him a bad defender
As one of the most talented guards in the 2026 class, Brown knows that he is under pressure to perform. There are plenty of guards in his class, and he wants to be the best among them.
That is the right mindset to have, especially when he is under pressure to perform as the Nets' biggest star moving forward. He has the talent, but he also has to work on his game to be truly impactful.
MORE: Mikel Brown Jr. is motivated by his rivalry with Darius Acuff Jr.
Brown is doing that at Summer League because he is not only hungry for wins, but he also wants to be the Nets' best player on both ends of the floor.
That hunger can separate him from the rest of his fellow draftees. He wants to improve on his game, and he wants to prove the doubters wrong, especially the detractors who keep taking away from his game due to his lackluster defense.
"The game plan was not for him to start on Acuff, but he said, ‘I'm taking him. I'm guarding him.’ So taking that challenge, I can't speak highly enough about the defensive intensity that he's brought to our team," Brooklyn's Summer League head coach Dutch Gaitley said about Brown.
In the latest match between the Nets and the Sacramento Kings, Brown wanted to have his familiar matchup against Darius Acuff Jr. They are quite familiar with each other, so Brown wanted to make sure he showcased his defense against stiff competition.
