Opening the scoring in the third inning Saturday night, Los Angeles Dodgers' Andy Pages celebrated his MLB All-Star Game commencement with an RBI single.
The one-out single to left field off San Diego Padres starter Griffin Canning (1-6) proved to be the winning run during the 3-0 victory at Dodger Stadium.
Earlier Saturday, Pages, a third-year big leaguer playing on a one-year, $800,000 deal, learned he earned his first start in the July 14 midseason classic in Philadelphia. Unable to share the news with his family, the 25-year-old experienced a day of contrasts.
The Mantua, Cuba, native attempted to reach out, but because of political chaos and nationwide energy and food shortages, Pages failed to receive confirmation via WhatsApp that his messages were delivered, The Athletic reported.
"I don’t know if they know, but at some point I think that someone will tell them or they’ll see it somewhere," Pages said. "In this moment, I think they’d feel really happy.
"They’re going to be really proud of me, of all the work that I’ve done since I was a kid. For my part, I’m going to feel very proud to give that satisfaction to them with that happiness."
Will communications with the Dodgers' front office go any smoother this offseason regarding a long-term contract?
Dodgers All-Star Andy Pages seeks long-term deal
Ordinarily, Pages, who will be coming off two All-Star-worthy campaigns, would anticipate a big payday, except this winter, MLB officials are preparing for a labor fight with the players' union over several issues, including a salary cap.
Pages, who is arbitration-eligible in 2027, may be an early MLB martyr.
If any form of salary cap is enacted, Pages' delayed deal could come in at a lower figure than recent years. Pages, who connected on 27 home runs as a sophomore, entered Sunday with 63 RBI, tied for the NL lead.
Pages' play in '26 continues to prove him worthy of an extension.
Pages remains set to become the sixth franchise player under the age of 26 to start an All-Star Game: Here is the list:
Year, Player
- 2019, Cody Bellinger
- 2015, Joc Pederson
- 2014, Yasiel Puig
- 1962-63, Tommy Davis
- 1941-42, Pete Reiser
Teammate Freddie Freeman believes Pages should have qualified for the list last season.
"It should be a second (All-Star start), I think," Freeman said, as reported by The Sporting Tribune. "He should have had it last year and he's been great for a couple (of) years now. So, I'm glad he's getting the recognition."
Leading the NL West by 14 games, the Dodgers (59-31) will attempt to complete a four-game sweep of the sinking Padres on Sunday night. Dropping to third place in the division, the Padres (43-45) dropped eight in a row.
Hopefully, Pages would have found a way to contact his family in Cuba before the first pitch.
Communications over a long-term commitment from the Dodgers, however, could prove more difficult.
