Monday high school playoffs: Summerville downs Byrnes in extra innings
Duncan, SC (WSPA)-Summerville scored two runs in the top of the ninth and held on for a 6-5 extra innings win over Byrnes Monday night to take a 1-0 lead in the best-of-three 5A Division I state championship softball series.
Byrnes moved in front, 4-3, in the bottom of the fifth on Addie Durrah’s RBI single before the Green Wave later tied the game, forcing extra innings.
Game two is Wednesday at Summerville.
Chesnee needed two wins at Saluda to claim the 2A upper state softball crown but the Tigers downed the Eagles in game one, 7-2, Monday afternoon.
Crescent is the only other area softball team competing for a state title and the Tigers are scheduled to open at home against Hanahan in the 2A series Tuesday at 6pm.
Dorman, Hanna, Southside Christian, and Clinton are scheduled to begin their state championship baseball series Tuesday evening. Hanna is the only team in the group who opens its best-of-three series at home facing Chapin in 5A Division II.
