Nebraska to host Wayne State for exhibition game to open 2026 season
Nebraska women's basketball revealed its exhibition opponent to open up the 2026-2027 season. The Huskers welcome Wayne State College for exhibition play in late October.
The game marks the first clash between the two teams since early November 2014. Nebraska defeated the Wildcats 84-43 in that matchup in front of a then-Nebraska exhibition-record crowd of 4,948 fans at PBA. The Huskers have been battling Wayne State as far back as 1975.
The Wildcats finished last season 10-18 and will be entering their second season under head coach Brian Ortmeier. A native of Dodge, Nebraska, and a Nebraska graduate, Ortmeier previously coached at Briar Cliff in Sioux City, Iowa, building up an 80-24 record in three seasons, including 15 wins over NAIA top-25 teams. He guided the Chargers to an NAIA semifinal appearance with a 30-6 record in 2024-25.
The game is set for Friday, Oct. 23, with a start time to be determined.
