Neil Spitalny posts day’s best round at Golfweek Super Legend National Championship
On Day 2 of the Golfweek Super Senior, Legend and Super Legend National Championship, the round of the day came from one of the most veteran players: Neil Spitalny in the Super Legend division. Spitalny, of Chattanooga, Tennessee, capitalized Wednesday on a beautiful scoring day at the Golf Club of Georgia in Alpharetta and fired a second-round 4-under 68.
Spitalny’s score was the round of the tournament so far and put him at 2 under for 36 holes, five shots ahead of Pete Allen in his age division. Spitalny, who competed in five consecutive U.S. Senior Amateurs from 2009 to 2013 and also won the Tennessee Senior Amateur in 2015, really shone on the back nine at the GC of Georgia, where he made three birdies coming in.
In the Super Senior division, little change occurred at the top of the leaderboard. Steve Maddalena of Jackson, Michigan, still leads, but now by four shots. His rounds of 69-71 have put him at 4 under.
Stevie Cannady, a winner in this event two years ago, is second. The Pooler, Georgia, resident ended up at even par after a second-round 74 that featured a tough start: two birdies in his first four holes.
Maddalena, for his part, made his first bogey of the week at the 14th hole on Wednesday.
Thomas Cornelia and Steve Humphrey are tied for third among the Super Seniors, both at 1 over, but Keith Holmes gained ground with his bogey-free 70 and now the Macon, Georgia, resident is fifth at 2 over. Four men are tied for sixth another shot back.
Emile Vaughan leads the Legend division after rounds of 72-70. A year ago, Vaughan, of Fairhope, Alabama, was T-3 in the Super Senior division. Now he has a slim one-shot lead over Bob Edens entering the final round with Mark Benefield, last year’s Super Senior runner-up in this event, in third place.
For the second year, a limited-field Senior Division Invitational is being played at the Golf Club of Georgia too, and Todd Doss continues to pull away in that division. Doss, who hit his stride earlier this year with a pair of victories at the Jack Hesler and Golfweek Senior Amateur, is 7 under and six shots ahead of Robert Sheats.
