Paige Spiranac Fires Back at Critics, Says ‘Debauchery’ Happens at the Nicest Courses Too

Golf influencer Paige Spiranac doubled down on her criticism of the concept of gatekeeping in golf, pointing out that bad manners and the lack of speed appear both at elite clubs and in public courses and are demonstrated by both experienced players and newbies.

The remarks came one day after Spiranac encouraged the golf community to accept new players and get rid of gatekeeping attitudes regarding the sport.

“A couple things here after reading the responses,” Spiranac stated in her latest tweet to the previous comments. “I’ve been lucky enough to play at some of the nicest courses and I also still play (and pay for rounds) at munis. Debauchery and poor pace of play happens at both from new golfers to old.”

Moreover, the influencer related the on-course behavior to cultural changes.

“I think people in general are less kind and considerate and that is also showing up on the golf course,” she said.

One of the most common answers to the first Spiranac’s post was a complaint regarding the pace of play. The golfing expert came up with a solution for the course owners and not for players. In particular, she recommended introducing a 12-15 minute interval between tee times to keep pace of play.

“Pace of play seems to be the biggest issue for everyone,” Spiranac wrote. “I think if courses stick to 12 to 15 minute interval tee times and crack down on pace of play then the experience will be enhanced for all.”

Furthermore, she pointed out that some critics take a hypocritical approach.

“It’s funny how people will preach decorum, etiquette and how it’s a gentleman’s game while also sending the most vile tweets lol,” Spiranac said smilingly.

In her first tweet, Spiranac expressed her joy for the expansion of the sport and frustration with a condescending attitude towards new golfers.

“I love golf. I want everyone to play, and I’m excited about all the new people getting into the game,” she wrote. “I feel that should be the attitude everyone should have if you truly love the game.”

Besides, she added: “I’m so tired of hearing ‘shrink’ and hating on this new culture of golf fans. This condescending and belittling behavior of new golfers is gross to me. You’re not better than someone else or morally superior because you’ve played longer. Golf doesn’t need to be stuffy and exclusive to preserve what we all love about the game so much. It’s about community.”

Finally, Spiranac concluded her first post with a challenge.

“Part of the growth is educating and helping new players learn,” she wrote. “Stop gatekeeping golf.”
