Penn State's Drew Allar Remains Unsigned for One Obvious Reason

It's rather weird that former Penn State quarterback Drew Allar remains unsigned by the Pittsburgh Steelers, but when we look at recent NFL history, it isn't as crazy as it might sound. I don't really understand why Allar is doing this, but there are reasons behind holdout negotiation tactics.

Ultimately, he's probably just looking for a guaranteed deal or something in writing suggesting that he's going to get what he wants.

According to the latest, there's a belief that Allar and other unsigned quarterbacks are doing so because of payout language and/or voiding specifics.

That makes this a far less interesting situation, and it's likely something both sides are just trying to figure out before they put pen to paper.

“In recent years, there was a trend that saw second-rounders often holding out for unique guarantee structures. This culminated last year, when 30 second-round picks remained unsigned at this point of the offseason. Fortunately, it seems like agents and teams have established some kind of standard, as only one second-round pick is currently without a contract.

“It isn’t a surprise that half of the grouping consists of quarterbacks. There’s been particular focus on the pair of first-round picks, Fernando Mendoza and Ty Simpson, with many pundits speculating that the rookies are pushing for contract language around payout language and/or voiding specifics. Presumably, the Raiders will eventually give into Mendoza’s demands, and it’s likely Simpson’s camp is seeing how that process plays out before they commit to the Rams. Carson Beck and Drew Allar won’t be able to make the same push as their first-round counterparts, but there’s a chance those rookies are also waiting to see how the other QBs succeed with their contract requests,” Ben Levine wrote.

As Levine touched on here, Allar unfortunately doesn't have nearly as much leverage as some of those other top guys.

That doesn't mean he has no chance of getting the type of contract he wants, but ultimately, this isn't a guy who is going to be able to go out there and demand everything in his new deal. No rookie is going to be able to do that, especially a third-rounder with some questions about how he'll develop in the NFL.
