That does not mean a deal is imminent. In fact, the same report makes clear that a move this summer remains difficult, largely because interested clubs are reluctant to meet Arsenal’s valuation.

Still, the fact this conversation is happening at all tells you something. Odegaard has gone from untouchable starter to a player whose long-term place is being openly debated. At a top club, that shift matters.

The numbers from last season underline why the debate has started. Across the 2025/26 Premier League campaign, Odegaard managed only 16 starts, with another eight appearances from the bench. Injuries played a part, but it was still his least productive season since arriving. More importantly, “towards the end of last season he found himself on the bench”. For a captain in his prime, that is not a minor detail.

Bruno Guimaraes move could change midfield picture

This is where Bruno Guimaraes comes in. Arsenal remain in the market for another midfielder, and TeamTalk says hopes are growing that a deal can be struck. If Arsenal commit £75m to a player of Guimaraes’ profile, then this becomes less about depth and more about redesigning the midfield.

Guimaraes brings authority, ball-winning, durability and presence. Those are qualities Arsenal clearly value. The report says the club want players with “different attributes and greater physicality”. Again, perfectly understandable. Yet when a club starts targeting those traits so explicitly, it is fair to ask where that leaves Odegaard.

He may still have a role, perhaps even a major one, but the direction of travel becomes harder to ignore. TeamTalk says there is “serious interest” in Odegaard, even if no club currently wants to go all the way on price. It also adds that the “2026/27 campaign could be Odegaard’s last at the Emirates Stadium”, with his contract running until June 30, 2028.

That is the key point. This might not be a summer saga that ends with a sale. It may simply be the beginning of a longer separation, one driven by evolving tactics, recruitment priorities and contract timing.

Arsenal transfer strategy leaves door open

Arsenal are not forcing him out. That would be too simplistic. The report itself says an exit this summer “is, crucially, not being ruled out entirely”, which is very different from actively trying to sell. It is more a case of a top club keeping options open while reshaping the squad.

There is logic to that. If no suitable bid arrives, Odegaard stays, and Arsenal still have a gifted creator and leader in the dressing room. “Should no move materialise, Odegaard will be expected to lead the team once more as they chase silverware.” Fine. But once the market starts discussing a captain in these terms, the dynamic changes.

The broader truth is simple. Arsenal are trying to get stronger. In doing so, they may be creating a future where one of their best recent players no longer fits as neatly as he once did. That is ruthless, and for clubs chasing major honours, ruthlessness is often the point.

As a disappointed Arsenal supporter, this is hard to read without feeling a bit fed up. Odegaard has been one of the faces of this team. He has carried responsibility, taken the captaincy seriously and delivered quality in big moments. So hearing that Arsenal are willing to listen “if the right offer arrives this summer” feels cold.

Yes, the midfield needs refreshing. Yes, more power and athleticism would help. But there is a danger in treating technical class and leadership like optional extras. Players like Odegaard do not grow on trees. If the club really believe the answer is to shuffle him down the order because they want “different attributes and greater physicality”, then they need to be absolutely certain the trade-off is worth it.

What really frustrates me is that this can start to look like squad-building by spreadsheet. Odegaard had injuries, he had a poor season by his standards, and suddenly there is “serious interest” elsewhere and talk that the “2026/27 campaign could be Odegaard’s last at the Emirates Stadium”. That is a huge swing.

If Bruno Guimaraes arrives and improves Arsenal, great. But the club should be adding quality, not casually nudging out the captain. Supporters can accept tough decisions. What they struggle with is the sense that a player who helped build this side could be moved on the moment he stops looking perfect.
