Some might say that Scottie Scheffler’s missed cut at the Genesis Scottish Open has been a long time coming.

Despite the impressive set of results that Scheffler has recorded on the PGA Tour in 2026, there is absolutely no doubt that he hasn’t been at his best.

In fact, there have been seriously concerning signs from the world number one at various points throughout the season this year.

Scottie Scheffler has still been the best and most consistent player on the PGA Tour in 2026.

The 30-year-old has one win and nine top-5 finishes to his name in 15 starts, and he is currently sitting at the top of the FedEx Cup points list.

He had also made 78 consecutive cuts before last week.

Scheffler missed the cut at the Scottish Open, bringing an end to his incredibly impressive run. But the real question is: how will he bounce back?

Nobody is sure how Scheffler will actually respond this week at Royal Birkdale.

The funny thing is, it feels like it would be more surprising if he won The Open than if he missed the cut this week on England’s north-west coast.

Interestingly, Scheffler missed the cut at the Scottish Open before The Open Championship in 2022, and he went on to record a T-21 finish at St Andrews that year.

However, we have to go all the way back to August 2022 for Scheffler’s previous missed cut before the Scottish Open.

He missed out on weekend golf in Memphis at the FedEx St. Jude Championship just under four years ago.

The current world number one finished in a tie for third in his next event after missing the cut in Memphis at the BMW Championship.

He was then tied for second at the Tour Championship the week after that.

Then he finished in a tie for 45th at the CJ CUP in South Carolina in October before recording a T-3 at the World Wide Technology Championship and a T-9 at the Cadence Bank Houston Open, both in November.

Scottie Scheffler will be determined to bounce back in style

Scheffler went on to win three times in 2023, including the unofficial Hero World Challenge, before dominating in 2024 and 2025.

He has struggled with his game at times in 2026, but who knows? Missing the cut at the Scottish Open may end up being the wake-up call that he needed.

The 30-year-old will have more time to prepare at Royal Birkdale – a golf course he has never played before.

Scheffler will also be fully aware that he needs to improve his mechanics. His fine results this season have masked some of his issues in a way.

He also has the added bonus of the cut streak burden having been lifted. He obviously wouldn’t have wanted to miss the cut in Scotland, but it might end up being a blessing in disguise for him.

Scottie Scheffler clearly has the talent and mentality required to win The Open at Royal Birkdale.

And he will undoubtedly be entering the week with lower expectations than he has in the past.
