Sports Flashback: Week of July 19 to 25

30 YEARS AGO — 1996

— Mark Gardner and his five-man crew aboard the Bark Ode captured the Mayor’s Cup as overall winner in the Racing Division, covering the course in 1:07:36. Gardner, who had already been sailing three hours before the 10 a.m. start, had been coming to Plattsburgh by sailboat for the race since 1984.

— Girls’ softball in the MVAC turned into a family affair as Elizabethtown-Lewis coach Nancy Bassett was named Coach of the Year and her daughter Hadley took MVP after leading the Lions to a perfect championship season two years after the team went winless. The junior pitched a one-hitter against Schroon Lake, followed with a no-hitter against Crown Point, and finished with 121 strikeouts.

— Meghan Welch, of West Chazy, broke her personal best in the 100-meter breaststroke twice in one day at the Empire State Games in Buffalo, going 1:21.37 in the preliminaries and 1:21.22 in the final for a fifth place finish — the top individual swim by a North Country athlete on the games’ opening day. Bombay’s Jessica Jock took sixth in the open 200 individual medley.

— Post 20 (19-6) captured its league title and headed to Glens Falls for sub-state play against Lake Placid, having beaten the Adirondacks in all three meetings. Plattsburgh had won seven straight.

50 YEARS AGO — 1976

— Gail Ricketson and her crewmates fought off a late Canadian charge to take bronze in the women’s eight at the Montreal Olympics, finishing behind East Germany and the Soviet Union in the final women’s rowing test of the Games. The 23-year-old Plattsburgh native and 1971 Plattsburgh High graduate competing in the first-ever women’s Olympic rowing finals became the first North Country Olympian to win a medal since 1960, when Jeannie Ashworth, of Wilmington, took bronze in speed skating at Squaw Valley.

— Au Sable Forks clinched the Champlain Valley Baseball League division crown at 10-2, with Dave Ghiloni, the CVBL’s winningest pitcher, raising his record again.

— Plattsburgh’s surprising Post 20 juniors met LaPointe in a showdown at Bailey Avenue, the two Legion clubs colliding in seven-inning affairs.

70 YEARS AGO — 1956

— The Clinton County All-Stars gave the Mineville town team a 14-7 trouncing in an exhibition, with catcher Pete Cronin the big stick at four hits in five trips and Tim Rounds coasting to the win on the mound.

— The Morrisonville Genesees handed Adirondack League-leading Gabriels an 11-1 walloping as righthander Gil Burnell set them back on their heels with a brilliant three-hitter.

— Plattsburgh Air Force Base nipped the Morrisonville Genesees and Gabriels shaded Peru in Adirondack League play, with Gabriels rallying from behind 9-8 in the last inning.

90 YEARS AGO — 1936

— The Lyon Mountain Miners beat the Majors 6-3 at the fair grounds. and after umpire Lynch’s third disputed call of the ninth inning, fans poured out of the stands and besieged him as he scurried for his car. Two state troopers arrived in time to keep the car from being toppled over with him inside, finally clearing a way out. Manager Bill Hafer’s third-inning home run and George Miner’s relief pitching did the rest. The Majors dropped to fourth.

— Sunbonnet babies, big-game hunters and the Gay Nineties turned up on the Hotel Champlain golf links at Bluff Point as the Plattsburgh Golf Club held a masquerade two-ball foursome tournament for more than 75 people. Mrs. George Lynch, an old-fashioned lady, and William Hinds, as Diamond Jim Brady, won best-dressed. Marjorie Harrison and Henry Straight, of Au Sable Forks, took low score.

— Bill McCorry’s Majors outlasted the Burlington Cardinals 10-9, a home run featuring the rally with Jack Cahill coming on in the ninth.
