— Plattsburgh's Babe Ruth 13-year-olds advanced to the winners' bracket of the New York State Eastern District Tournament in dramatic fashion as Mike McNichols — down to the team's final out — laced a two-out, two-run single off Cohoes reliever Vinnie Caglione in the bottom of the seventh to score Ryan DeCamp and Mike Rivers for a 2-1 win at Lefty Wilson Field.

— The Au Sable Forks American Legion Post 504 Old-Timers beat Lyon Mountain Post 1623 to win the Popeye Coolidge Memorial Trophy in the preliminary of the 34th annual Au Sable Forks Fast-Pitch Softball Tournament. 50 YEARS AGO — 1976

— A North Country men's All-Star team stunned the touring U.S. Women's Olympic basketball team, 94-89, in an exhibition at Plattsburgh State's Memorial Hall — the prelude to the U.S.-Canada men's clash — with Plattsburgh High's Joe Cardany and Holmes sparking the locals against a Team USA loaded with future legends Pat Head (Summitt), Nancy Lieberman, Ann Meyers and Lusia Harris.

— Post 20's juniors captured the First Warren County American Legion Baseball Tournament, edging host Glens Falls, 2-1. Mike Jodoin settled in after a first-inning run, and Post 20 (5-3) tied it in the sixth on a Danny Burnell single, a Pete Proctor double and a Rick Vaughn squeeze.

— Bernie Griffith edged 18-year-old Steve Dragoon, of West Chazy, by a car length to win the 33-lap feature at Plattsburgh International Raceway. Danny Bridges took third and Dick Nephew fourth.

70 YEARS AGO — 1956

— Gabriels beat Peru, 9-5, in an Adirondack League game, riding a five-run second inning to hold first place at 6-1. Bucky Roche got the win.

— The 26th U.S. Infantry regimental team beat the Texaco Stars of Rouses Point, 7-2, at Plattsburgh Barracks behind veteran right-hander Lawrence Lucy's six-hitter and six Rouses Point errors greasing the skids.
