Following their first Finals appearance since 2014, the San Antonio Spurs entered the offseason looking to continue building a championship-caliber roster around Victor Wembanyama.

After adding talent through the draft, retaining key contributors, and signing Tobias Harris in free agency, San Antonio’s offseason moves received strong marks from multiple outlets:

ESPN: A

No team received a higher grade from ESPN’s Zach Kram than the Spurs. Kram noted that Tobias Harris’ two-year deal addressed a major need, but the biggest reason behind the “A” grade was Victor Wembanyama’s decision to sign a 25% maximum extension rather than pursue a potential 30% supermax. The move could save the Spurs more than $50 million over the life of the deal and provide significant financial flexibility as they continue building a championship-caliber roster around their franchise cornerstone.

The Athletic’s Jared Weiss wrote that San Antonio "held everything together after its Finals run came up short" and praised the team's signings and draft strategy. Victor Wembanyama's decision to forgo the supermax to give the franchise additional financial flexib

ility also contributed to the high grade. While Weiss noted that the Spurs still needed more guard depth if they did not retain Jordan McLaughlin, San Antonio addressed that concern by re-signing the veteran guard. Weiss also pointed out that the team could still use “another knockdown shooter or physical big at the four.”

While the Spurs still have areas to address before reaching championship contention, their offseason moves demonstrate a clear commitment to building a sustainable contender around Wembanyama. With their franchise cornerstone locked in and a deeper roster around him, the Spurs will look to continue their rise as they pursue their first championship since 2014.
