After surprisingly erupting for eight runs on 12 hits against the Detroit Tigers on Monday, the Boston Red Sox immediately crashed back to earth on Tuesday, losing 4-0 to the New York Yankees.

The Red Sox couldn't get anything going against Luis Gil and the Yankees' bullpen, mustering just four hits and three walks in their second shutout loss of the year.

It was another poor performance by Boston's offense, which has scored two runs or less in four of its last five games, all at Fenway Park. Tuesday's game was the first time New York held the Red Sox scoreless at Fenway since Sept. 19, 2020, towards the end of Boston's disastrous Covid season.

The Red Sox have scored 2 or fewer runs in 4 of their last 5 games. 5 of their last 7. Currently ranked 24th in runs. 28th in OPS. Still tied for last in homers with 13.

Tuesday's performance was a microcosm of the Red Sox's offensive woes this season. They chased too many pitches outside the strike zone, didn't make hard contact, hit the ball into the ground and fell short with runners in scoring position.

It's been a tough year at the plate for Boston, which ranks 24th in runs, 28th in OPS and tied for last in home runs, which explains the team's 9-14 record.

Unfortunately for the Red Sox, they have two more tough matchups in this series against Max Fried and Cam Schlittler, so getting back on track against the Yankees won't be easy.
