Steelers roster spotlight: Is Pat Freiermuth still Pittsburgh's TE1?

Jonnu Smith is gone, clearing the way for Pittsburgh Steelers tight end Pat Freiermuth to once again resume his role as the team's top tight end in 2026. At least, that's what we're hoping for.

Career with the Steelers

Freiermuth, selected by the Steelers in the second round of the 2021 NFL Draft, is coming off a down year in Pittsburgh, recording just 41 catches for 486 yards and four touchdowns. Much of the blame can be placed on Arthur Smith's subpar offensive scheme, however, and there's reason to believe Freiermuth can return to his usual playmaking self this upcoming season.

What's next in 2026?

While TE2 Darnell Washington is expected to make another big jump in 2026, Freiermuth could honestly have a comeback year like no other. New offensive system? Check. Overhauled roster? Check. Freiermuth is heading into an ideal scenario and has all the tools at his disposal to once again succeed as Pittsburgh's top tight end.
