Suni Lee Announces Return to Gymnastics Ahead of LA28 Olympics

Two-time Olympian Suni Lee announced she is returning to gymnastics to make a run for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics on social media on Tuesday. She described her return as “more than a comeback.”

“I know what I’m capable of,” Lee said in her announcement video. “I am willing to do whatever it takes to get there.”

The journey continues!

Lee represented Team USA in both the 2020 Tokyo Games and the 2024 Paris Games.

She won the individual all-around gold medal, the team silver medal and a bronze medal on the uneven bars at the Tokyo Olympics. Then in 2024, Lee helped Team USA win the gold medal and won individual bronze medals in the all-around and on bars.

In 2023, Lee announced she was retiring from college gymnastics at Auburn. She was diagnosed with a chronic kidney disease but ultimately overcame the diagnosis to compete in the Paris Olympics.

Many expected Lee to retire from gymnastics entirely after her 2024 Olympic run, but Lee has other plans.

Which Other Former Olympians Are Returning For LA28?

In addition to Lee, two-time Olympian Jade Carey is also battling for a spot at the 2028 Olympics. Carey and Lee both competed together on the Olympic team in 2020 and 2024.

Hezley Rivera, who was 16 at the 2024 Olympics, has also returned to elite gymnastics and will compete for a roster spot for 2028. Meanwhile, Simone Biles and Jordan Chiles have not officially confirmed if they will compete but have each opened the door on the possibility.

The 2024 team was the oldest U.S. women’s gymnastics Olympic team since 1952, as Lee, Biles, Chiles and Carey were all in their 20s. Their age has even inspired UCLA gymnastics legend Katelyn Ohashi to pursue a 2028 Olympic berth at age 29.

It is possible the 2028 team could set a new record for the oldest U.S. women’s gymnastics Olympic team in history.
