Suns' Koa Peat gives teammate Devin Booker ultimate compliment

Koa Peat is eager to get to work with new teammate Devin Booker, and the 30th pick believes he can help the five-time All-Star and the Phoenix Suns on the court.

Peat was a third-team All-Big 12 selection last season at Arizona, averaging 14.1 points, 5.6 rebounds and 2.6 assists while shooting 35% from 3-point range. He was also named to the Big 12 All-Freshman team, helping the Wildcats to the Final Four for the first time since 2001.

The 19-year-old established himself as a first-round pick this year because of his paint scoring, with his ball-fakes, hesitation moves and jump shot. He is confident that his skill set and overall ability, alongside Booker, can be crucial additions to the team next season.

"Just playing off him," Peat said of Booker in an interview Saturday on Amazon Prime. "Trying to make him better as a player. Doing the little things. Creating for him and just learning from him. He is one of the best players in the league. He is a legend. Learning from him, I think, is going to help my game for sure."

Peat logged four appearances with the Suns in the NBA Summer League, averaging 16.8 points, 4.8 rebounds, 2.2 assists and 1.5 steals while shooting 51% from the field. He scored 12 or more points in each appearance, highlighted by a 19-point effort on Wednesday.

The 6-foot-8 forward had the opportunity to log minutes with several teammates in game action and practice, including Khaman Maluach, Rasheer Fleming and Koby Brea. Those reps should help smooth his transition when the team convenes for training camp in September.

Peat wanted to use summer league as a chance to begin adjusting to the increased competition level the NBA has to offer. He believes his stint in the desert was a success.

"I feel like from a young age, I try to play to my own pace," Peat said. "Feel out the game with my IQ. When to go fast, when to go slow. Pick and choose when to speed it up a little bit, but I feel like the pace of the game, it has been a smooth transition for me."
