Texans bring in Tennessee CB Colton Hood for top-30 visit

The Houston Texans have perhaps the league's best secondary entering 2026, but could general manager Nick Caserio look to build for the future with Kamari Lassiter entering Year 3 and perhaps a prominent payday?

Likely, it's not happening in the first round, but the Texans aren't leaving any stone unturned.

According to reports, potential first-round pick Colton Hood visited the Texans earlier this week. Hood, a standout for the Tennessee Volunteers last season, also visited the Las Vegas Raiders, Seattle Seahawks, Dallas Cowboys, New York Jets and Kansas City Chiefs.

A former starter at Colorado, Hood transferred to Knoxville last spring and became Tennessee's No. 1 defensive back with future first-round pick Jermod McCoy sidelined. A third-team All-Southeastern Conference selection, Hood finished with 50 tackles, 4.5 tackles for loss, eight pass breakups and a forced fumble.

The Texans aren't expected to target a cornerback in Round 1, but given that Houston has two second-round picks, a slip in the draft could lead to potentially a shift in targeting positions on Day 2. The Texans' first of two second-round picks is at No. 38, 10 picks after their first-round pick at No. 28. Lassiter, who has been perhaps a top 10 cornerback in the sport since being drafted out of Georgia in 2024, will be up for a massive payday in 2027.

Houston can't afford to keep everyone on defense in the future and Lassiter would garner significant draft capital next offseason should the team elect to move him before he hits free agency. Hood, who likely is better suited as a nickel defender in the pros, could at least compete for reps this fall and eventually carve out a role in certain formations while training for the future.

It's not that far-fetched an idea, especially given that general manager Nick Caserio has said ad nauseam that the team will not target one position and rather the "BPA approach," better known as the best player available method.

"There's a reason that we grade the players and put them on the board and stack the board accordingly. So, you start hopscotching around, it goes against the integrity of what you're doing with the process from start to finish," Caserio said on Monday. "So, our goal is to build the best football team we can for the 2026 season. There are some players we added in the spring that hopefully will be able to help us. Hopefully there's some players that we add next week that will help us."

The Texans own eight draft picks next week.
