Inter Miami thought they could easily add Casemiro to their already-star-studded roster, but they are finding out that there are more obstacles in their path.

Inter Miami already boast a strong roster of star players. Led by Lionel Messi, Inter Miami currently includes former World Cup and Champions League winners like Luis Suarez and Rodrigo de Paul.

However, when they looked to sign former Real Madrid and Manchester United midfielder Casemiro, they didn’t expect there to be such complications.

Inter Miami might lose Casemiro due to prior LA Galaxy agreement

According to Tom Bogert and Paul Tenorio of The Athletic, Inter Miami’s signing of Casemiro is being investigated for tampering.

The MLS issued a statement that they would be investigating the tampering allegation, despite both Inter Miami and LA Galaxy reaching a settlement for the discovery priority to sign the Brazilian.

“Major League Soccer is reviewing a tampering allegation against Inter Miami CF. The league is gathering all relevant information and will refrain from further comment until the review is complete.

“While Inter Miami CF and the LA Galaxy have reached a settlement for the Discovery Priority to sign Casemiro, the terms will be released upon conclusion of the tampering investigation.”

The Galaxy had the discovery rights for Casemiro, which was introduced to try and stop MLS teams from fighting over the right to sign high-quality players.

According to the rules, MLS teams have to acquire the discovery rights of a player from the original team before approaching them.

This investigation will determine the exact amount Inter Miami must pay the LA Galaxy for Casemiro’s discovery rights.

MLS must show strong deliberation to avoid Inter Miami favouritism allegations

Given that Inter Miami are led by one of the biggest stars in world football in Lionel Messi, there is always a concern that the MLS will let them off with a slap on the wrist so as not to hamper the growth of the league.

The impact Messi has had on the MLS since he joined Inter Miami in 2023 cannot be understated, as he has helped the league explode in popularity.

For David Beckham, landing Messi was a coup, as he was able to get the best player in football history on his team just six months after he led his country to a FIFA World Cup win.

But Inter Miami not facing the appropriate punishment for tampering, if found guilty of it, would suggest that the MLS is going easy on them because they have the golden goose of the league.
