The Wait is Over: Mizzou Cross Country Unveils 2026 Schedule

Missouri’s cross country program has finalized its full schedule for the 2026 season, with loads to dive in to. Head coach Brett Halter released the schedule Friday, and it is jam-packed with heavy hitting matchups, elite competition on the road and a massive postseason home field advantage.

Here is how the road to the championships looks for the Tigers this fall, along with a look back at how they fared on some of these courses last season.

Early Road Meets

The Tigers start the year with back-to-back road tests to get the gears turning. First up is a trip north to Ames, Iowa for the Iowa State Cyclone Opener on Friday, Sept. 4, followed two weeks later by a quick trip to the Billiken XC Invite in St. Louis on Friday, Sept. 18.

Both of these meets will give the athletes a chance to fine-tune their race day execution in a low-pressure environment.

Back at Gans Creek the Classic Returns

On Friday, Sept. 25, the Tigers finally come home to host the eighth annual Gans Creek Classic. This is not just any home meet; it marks the first time Mizzou will compete on their course since hosting the memorable 2025 NCAA Cross Country National Championships.

The women’s and men’s teams placed eighth and 12th, respectively, in their second home meet of the season last year. Monica Wanjiku led the women with an 11th-place finish in the 6K gold race, crossing the line in 19:35.1. Elijah Limo was the top finisher for the men, placing 36th in the 8K gold race with a time of 23:13.0.

Alongside those top finishers, Suzy Lecoutre placed 29th and Kobi Walker finished 59th in the women’s race. For the men, Drew Rogers finished 43rd in his race with a time of 23:18.9, while Tyler Freiner placed 86th.

With there being two fewer home meets this season compared to last, the Tigers will have to maximize their single regular-season opportunity at Gans Creek to establish a true home-course rhythm ahead of the SEC Championships.

Regular Season Finale: The Nuttycombe Invitational

Missouri concludes its regular season campaign on Friday, Oct. 19, traveling to Madison, Wisconsin for the Nuttycombe Invitational. Hosted by the University of Wisconsin at the Thomas Zimmer Championship Cross Country Course, the meet traditionally features one of the most competitive fields in the country.

SECs on Home Turf

For the first time in five years, the SEC Championships runs through Columbia, Missouri. Championship season officially returns to mid-Missouri on Oct. 30, marking just the second time in program history that Gans Creek will play host to the SEC Championships.

Last year at the SEC Championships in Knoxville, Tennessee, the men and women secured fifth place overall. On the men’s side, Rogers rose to the occasion, taking seventh overall with a time of 23:29.60. Wanjiku soared just as high, with her stellar sixth-place finish and time of 20:02.20.

Austin Popplewell, Limo and Ryder James secured 24th, 31st and 37th overall for the men. In the women’s race, Lecoutre, Walker and Mirriam Chepkirui finished 33rd, 36th and 38th for Mizzou.

The Road to NCAA Glory

Following the conference meet, Mizzou transitions to the national stage for the qualifying rounds of the NCAA postseason schedule. The Tigers will return to Ames for the second time in the campaign to compete in the NCAA Midwest Regional Championships on Friday, Nov. 13, at the Iowa State Cross Country Course.

At the 2025 NCAA Midwest Regional Championships hosted by Mizzou, the women’s team placed fourth overall while the men finished seventh. Wanjiku, Walker, Rogers and Limo earned All-Midwest Regional honors following their performances in the women’s 6K and men’s 10K races.

The cross country season concludes on Saturday, Nov. 21, at the NCAA Cross Country Championships, which will be held at the Lavern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course in Terra Haute, Indiana. The meet is hosted by Indiana State University.

During last year’s NCAA Championships, the Tigers women’s team placed 28th overall as the program hosted the national meet for the very first time. Wanjiku led the squad by finishing 35th with a personal-best 6K time of 19:17.4 to earn All-American honors. Wanjiku became the second freshman in history of the women’s program to accomplish this.

What This Means

With four regular season meets and three postseason meets, the 2026 campaign will be filled with action. According to Mizzou Athletics, the Tigers return 18 individuals from their 2025 roster, giving the coaching staff the opportunity to work with familiar faces, while also integrating newcomers into the program.
