Three storylines to watch as Bill Belichick, UNC hit ACC Kickoff

North Carolina coach Bill Belichick and standouts Melkart Abou-Jaoude, Christo Kelly and Jordan Shipp will take center stage Friday at ACC Kickoff, where the Tar Heels face pointed questions and heightened expectations after a 4-8 season.

Belichick and the three players will make the media rounds at the Hilton Charlotte Uptown, with scheduled stops on ACC Network, ESPN, SiriusXM and other outlets as the league holds its annual preseason showcase. ACC Network will carry live coverage beginning at 9 a.m. Eastern.

Beyond the usual preseason talking points, UNC arrives with no shortage of storylines. Belichick alone draws attention after last year’s collapse, and the pressure has shifted squarely onto him and the program to deliver a major turnaround in 2026.

Here are three key UNC storylines to watch at ACC Kickoff.

Bill Belichick will be the focus once again, but for different reasons

Last season in Charlotte, Belichick was surrounded by a swarm of journalists, cameras and microphones, turning the scene into a full-blown circus. That was before the circus became a clown show in the fall, when UNC finished 4-8 and dealt with embarrassments on and off the field.

This season, there will be a similar crush of media, but without all the hoopla. Reporters will ask what went wrong last fall, what the program has done to improve the roster, and, of course, the inevitable hot-seat questions.

Can Bobby Petrino revive the offense?

One of the most significant offseason changes was appointing Bobby Petrino as offensive coordinator, taking over from Freddie Kitchens. Petrino, with his extensive experience and aggressive passing approach, stands out as one of the ACC's most interesting coordinator appointments. How swiftly the offense adjusts will be a key topic of discussion.

Melkart Abou-Jaoude steps to the forefront

Abou-Jaoude is by far UNC’s best player and its biggest draft prospect. That’s why his role as one of North Carolina’s player representatives is such a big deal: it showcases his ability to lead a team and handle tough questions from the press at a major media event.

The 6-foot-5, 260-pound edge rusher registered an ACC-best 10.5 sacks last season, with most of them coming in the second half of the year.
