Titans' Cam Ward named a 'player under pressure to perform in Year 2'

Tennessee Titans quarterback Cam Ward doesn't have to look far to find expectations. As the No. 1 overall pick in the 2025 NFL draft, he was always going to face immense scrutiny, despite his circumstances. After an up-and-down rookie season, those expectations have only grown entering his sophomore season.

PFF recently included Ward among the NFL players under the most pressure to perform well in 2026. They specifically pointed to the importance of a successful second season having an impact on the direction of the Titans' rebuild. While the designation may be a bit premature, it's simply the reality of being a franchise quarterback.

Despite being the first overall pick a year ago, Ward has yet to consistently light the league on fire. In fact, his rookie play left plenty to be desired.

Within the aforementioned 26 qualified quarterbacks, Ward finished last in both overall (58.4) and PFF passing (56.4) grades. His 3.7% turnover-worthy play rate was even higher than Dart’s, and his 22.4% uncatchable inaccurate throw rate ranked sixth among passers with at least 250 attempts.

Ward did put his elite skillset on display late in the year against the Seahawks, Chiefs and Jaguars, notching 78.7-plus overall grades. His underlying talent, plus a better receiving corps and a new offensive coordinator, should bode better for 2026. Ward may not need to be great as quickly as Dart given the Titans’ slower timeline, but he still has plenty of questions to answer in Year 2.

The good news for the Titans is that Ward enters 2026 in a much better position to succeed than he did entering his rookie season in 2025.

Titans have set up Ward for success

Not many young quarterbacks develop into their final form immediately. However, those who are best positioned among surrounding talent have the best chance of developing at a faster rate. Recognizing that, Tennessee spent the offseason making several moves to accelerate Ward's growth.

The Titans added dynamic weapons by selecting wide receiver Carnell Tate with the number four overall pick and signing former New York Giants wide receiver Wan'Dale Robinson. Their additions give Ward additional playmakers alongside veteran Calvin Ridley and upcoming sophomores Elic Ayomanor and Chimere Dike.

However, the most important addition was the hiring of offensive coordinator Brian Daboll. Throughout his coaching career, Daboll has earned a reputation as one of the league's best quarterback developers, with Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen being his best example. His ability to build offenses around a quarterback's strengths was a major reason Tennessee targeted him. Now, Ward has one of the NFL's most respected offensive minds guiding his development.

PFF's assessment of Ward is a reflection of the responsibility that comes with being a franchise quarterback. He flashed plenty of promise as a rookie, but fell short in areas that pause for concern. For that reason, PFF is right that he has plenty to prove in 2026.
