Washburn women’s golf is making strides in second season

TOPEKA (KSNT) – In the Ichabods second season, Washburn women’s golf has six top five finishes, including two second-place titles and the program’s first-ever first-place victory.

After the program’s inaugural 2024-25 season, the Ichabods have continued to help lay the foundation for women’s golf at Washburn.

“I love when our coach tells us that we’re making history,” Washburn women’s golfer Angelina Borg-Malec said. “I love Washburn, and it’s pretty cool to be a part of the first years of this program.”

On March 24, the women won their first tournament as a program, placing first out of 13 teams at Washburn’s Firekeeper Open.

Most recently, the squad is coming off a sixth-place finish out of 17 teams at the Spring Region Preview. Two golfers tied for fourth place at three over par; Borg-Malec shot a final round 2-under 70, and Keira Ronsick closed with an even-par at 72 in the final round.

“I think team-wise we are at a great moment right now,” Washburn golfer Susana Granados Carrion said. “Everybody’s like really confident, having a great time, which is like the best part of it. Just having fun on the course, and just playing for your team, not just yourself.”

It’s been quite the season for Borg-Malec, the French native has earned two MIAA women’s golfer of the week honors this season. She joins Ronsick as only the second female Ichabod golfer to receive the honor.

The Ichabods finished their first season with a 13th-place finish at the NCAA Central Regional, and now gearing up for its second post-season.
