What is the Argentina national anthem? Lyrics and English translation
On Wednesday, July 15, Argentina and England will play in what should be a spirited World Cup semifinal showdown.
The winner of the 3 p.m. ET semifinal match at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta will face Spain in the World Cup final on Sunday, July 19.
Before both teams kick off, the national anthem of each nation will be played. Here are the lyrics to "Himno Nacional Argentino," as written by Vicente López y Planes in 1812 with music composed by Blas Parera in 1813. Also known as "Marcha Patriótica" (Patriotic March), the song was adopted as Argentina's official national anthem in the same year it was composed.
Argentina national anthem lyrics
Oid mortales, el grito Sagrado
¡Libertad! ¡Libertad! ¡Libertad!
Oid el ruido de rotas cadenas
Ved en trono a la noble igualdad
Ya su trono dignísimo abrieron
Las Provincias Unidas del Sud
Y los libres del mundo responden
¡Al gran pueblo argentino, salud!
Y los libres del mundo responden
¡Al gran pueblo argentino, salud!
Sean eternos los laureles,
que supimos conseguir.
Coronados de gloria vivamos
¡O juremos con gloria morir!
¡O juremos con gloria morir!
Argentina national anthem translated into English
Hear, mortals, the sacred cry:
"Freedom! Freedom! Freedom!"
Hear the sound of broken chains
See noble equality enthroned.
Their most worthy throne have now opened
The United Provinces of the South.
And the free people of the world reply:
"To the great Argentine people, cheers!"
And the free ones of the world reply:
"To the great Argentine people, cheers!"
May the laurels be eternal
that we were able to achieve
Let's live crowned in glory
Or let's swear to die with glory!
Or let's swear to die with glory!
