What time is Mexico-England World Cup Round of 16 match?

The 2026 FIFA World Cup continues on Sunday, July 5, as the Round of 16 heats up with one of the most highly anticipated matches of the tournament to date when Mexico faces England at Estadio Azteca in Mexico City.

Leading up to Sunday night’s match, there was some discussion about moving up the kick-off time six hours due to threats of inclement weather.

Mexico’s Round of 32 match against Ecuador at Estadio Azteca was previously delayed due to thunderstorms in the area, and FIFA wanted to avoid a repeat.

However, after protests by the Mexican Football Federation and the English FA, FIFA stuck with the original kick-off time of 8:00 p.m. ET. El Tri coach Javier Aguirre was among the most vocal critics of the possibility of shifting the start time for the match.

It’s a kick in the gut; now we must change everything. It’s not that all the work goes down the drain — though it’s close — because you’re having to scrap six hours of scheduled planning. I don’t like it at all,” Aguirre said, via ABC News.

“Obviously, we’ll abide by what FIFA says, but neither my players nor I are happy about it.”

Throughout history, Mexico has turned Estadio Ateca into a fortress, losing just two competitive matches in 56 years at their home stadium. For England, it marks the first time returning to Estadio Azteca since losing to Argentina thanks to the infamous “Hand of God” goal.
