The New York Mets should be considering a fire sale at this year's trade deadline.

Players on expiring contracts are likely to be the first to go.

But even amid New York's rough season, other names with multiple years of control will be harder to trade for.

Examining the catcher's spot, the Mets have Francisco Alvarez and Luis Torrens. Neither has strong odds to be dealt, writes The Athletic's Will Sammon

"Still, a deal involving Torrens or Alvarez would net the Mets a strong return. The issue that the Mets would run into, however, is that they would then need a replacement for 2027," Sammon wrote. "And that’s tough. In the catching market, help is hard to find."

Above-average catchers are few and far between in the Majors. The Mets would put themselves in a tricky situation going into next season if they were to trade Alvarez and/or Torrens.

However, Alvarez has some trade value, according to evaluators close to Sammon.

"Again, it seems unlikely, but Alvarez is perhaps the only position player under club control holding legitimate value that the Mets might consider moving on from. He doesn’t hit free agency until after the 2029 season," Sammon wrote. "

"Multiple evaluators said it wouldn’t be surprising if Alvarez could fetch major-league-ready pitching or hitting help from a different position in a trade."

The best backstops who could be made available at the deadline are Ryan Jeffers of the Minnesota Twins, Hunter Goodman of the Colorado Rockies, and Tyler Stephenson of the Cincinnati Reds

Excluded from that group are Alvarez and Torrens.

At this point, the Mets should be listening to any offers. But those two players are likely to stick around in Queens.
