World Cup: O'Reilly and Guehi help England to reach World Cup quarter-finals

The Three Lions knocked out co-hosts Mexico in a five goal thriller at the Azteca.

After kick-off was delayed by an hour and England had an altitude disadvantage to overcome fans across the country were no doubt anxious for Thomas Tuchel’s side as they faced a Mexico side with a huge home advantage.

Despite early warning shots from Raul Jimenez, Jordan Pickford stood strong to deny him by tipping his efforts over the bar.

Mexico were yet to concede a goal at the tournament until Jude Bellingham struck twice in 98 seconds during the first-half to put England in a comfortable position.

The Azteca was stunned into silence before Julian Quinones pulled one back for the hosts before the break.

The Three Lions continued to push for a third as Nico O’Reilly struck the post before Quansah slid in and was shown a straight red card in the 54th minute.

The referee awarded England a penalty minutes later when Anthony Gordon was brought down by the goalkeeper and Harry Kane fired home.

Alireza Faghani then pointed to the spot again, this time for a Mexico penalty, which allowed Jimenez to beat Pickford.

Thomas Tuchel’s side threw everything at it to see out the tie and the defence did more than that to show excellent mentality.

Their gutsy 3-2 victory sees Marc Guehi, Nico O’Reilly and Elliot Anderson go head-to-head with Erling Haaland’s Norway in the quarter-finals.
