3 MLB blockbuster trades we will see before the trade deadline

The MLB trade deadline rarely delivers every blockbuster fans imagine. We typically see smaller trades, ones that fit particular needs for specific teams. Every so often, though, we are treated to some major headlines, and this year should still produce at least three deals big enough to reshape October. Let’s take a closer look at what they might be.

Kevin Gausman to the Cubs

Toronto is sliding toward a sale, and Gausman is the clearest veteran to move. Chicago needs another starter it can trust in a postseason series, has the prospect depth to make Toronto listen, and is not included on Gausman’s reported eight-team no-trade list.

Adding Gausman gives them another experienced arm capable of working deep into games and reduces the pressure on the bullpen. This fit makes too much sense to remain theoretical.

Reid Detmers to the Phillies

Philadelphia’s fifth-starter problem has become impossible to ignore. The Phillies have championship expectations, but they cannot keep giving away regular-season games.

Detmers is more than a temporary patch. He is controllable through 2028, misses bats, and still carries development upside. That control will make the price uncomfy, but Dave Dombrowski has never built contenders by protecting every prospect.

The Angels finally appear willing to listen. Philadelphia should be the team that forces them to act.

Mason Miller to the Yankees

This is the boldest prediction and the one most likely to dominate deadline day.

The Padres have not ruled out moving Miller, while the Yankees have already been connected to the elite closer. New York’s bullpen is good, but October is not about being good. It is about shortening games until opponents feel they have six innings to score.

Miller would give the Yankees overwhelming late-game power and protection behind David Bednar. His team control through 2029 also makes this more than a rental gamble.
