Packers News: Green Bay betting on internal improvement again. History suggests that’s smart

The Green Bay Packers have heard the criticism all offseason — and I’ve written about them a bit already. After a relatively quiet free agency period, some national analysts have questioned whether Brian Gutekunst did enough to elevate the roster. 

Inside Green Bay, however, the approach appears unchanged.

ESPN’s training camp preview recently identified several of the Packers’ biggest storylines as players poised for larger roles rather than newcomers expected to transform the team. Jordan Love is looking to bounce back from a slightly inconsistent 2025 season, Jordan Morgan is expected to seize the left tackle job, Lukas Van Ness faces heightened expectations off the edge, and running back MarShawn Lloyd could finally carve out a meaningful role after an injury-shortened rookie year.

Those player-development storylines have been the Packers’ blueprint under Gutekunst for years. Rather than chasing veteran solutions, Green Bay has consistently invested in drafting and developing talent, trusting that young players will improve with experience and eventually replace departing veterans.

This isn’t news to readers here, but it’s worth level setting during the offseason as we all tend to become at least a little detached from reality in the summer months.

This strategy has already produced foundational contributors across the roster, and the next wave of development could determine whether the Packers become legitimate contenders in 2026. Our Jon Meerdink wrote about some of that development just yesterday.

Training camp will offer the first real glimpse into whether the team’s bets are paying off. If Love returns to form, Morgan solidifies the offensive line, Van Ness becomes a more disruptive pass rusher, and Lloyd provides another explosive option in the backfield, Green Bay’s roster could look significantly stronger than many outside observers currently believe.
