A’ja Wilson Shines with 33 Points as Aces Secure Playoff Spot Against Mercury

PHOENIX (AP) — A’ja Wilson delivered an impressive performance on Wednesday, scoring 33 points and grabbing 11 rebounds, leading the Las Vegas Aces to an 86-76 victory over the Phoenix Mercury. This win marks a significant moment for the Aces, as they clinch a spot in the Commissioner's Cup championship, following their recent loss to Dallas that ended a six-game winning streak.

The Aces, now with an 11-4 record, are set to compete for the Commissioner's Cup title on June 30 against New York. In this matchup, NaLyssa Smith contributed 21 points, while Jackie Young added 20 points and dished out nine assists. Young also showcased her defensive skills with a career-high five steals, and Wilson added four steals to help the Aces finish the game with a total of 18 steals, tying them with Toronto for the highest in a WNBA game this season.

Kahleah Copper led the Mercury with 26 points, and Alyssa Thomas recorded a double-double with 10 points and 11 assists. However, the Mercury, now at 4-11, have struggled recently, suffering their fourth consecutive loss. In the first half, Phoenix shot an impressive 60% from the field, including 7 of 10 from beyond the arc, and held a narrow lead of 49-45 at halftime.

Chennedy Carter was absent from the Aces lineup for the second straight game due to illness. Earlier in the season, the Mercury had defeated the Aces 99-66 in their opening match. Looking ahead, the Aces will host the Golden State team on Sunday, while the Mercury will face Seattle on the same day.
