Antonin Panenka Reflects on Legendary Penalty Kick 50 Years Later

Antonin Panenka, the Czech footballer whose audacious penalty kick has become a legendary moment in the sport, recently reminisced about the event that changed his life. The memorable kick, executed during the 1976 European Championship final against West Germany, not only secured victory for Czechoslovakia but also altered the dynamics between Panenka and West German goalkeeper Sepp Maier.

With a hearty laugh, Panenka shared his fondness for the moment while seated in an office at Prague's Bohemians football club. “He went 35 years without uttering a single word to me,” he recounted, referring to Maier's initial reaction to the infamous spot-kick. The playful nature of his penalty, which involved a delicate chip over the diving Maier, has since become a defining moment in football history.

However, the relationship between the two men was complicated. “I read some articles that he even had a shooting target in his garage with my face on it that he used to fire darts at,” Panenka revealed, illustrating the depth of the rivalry that emerged from that fateful match. Fortunately, the two have since reconciled and now “get on well enough.”

Despite the fame and recognition that followed, Panenka noted with a wry smile, “The only disadvantage is that I don’t get any royalties from it.” His iconic kick continues to inspire players to adopt similar techniques, cementing Panenka's legacy in the annals of football history.
