Ballard on Anthony Richardson's trade request with training camp starting

Training camp has arrived for the Indianapolis Colts, and Anthony Richardson is still a member of the team.

His trade request, however, is still on the table, according to GM Chris Ballard, who met with local media members on Tuesday.

Ballard's intention at this time is to keep Richardson. The Colts aren't going to "give him away," Ballard said, via Mike Chappell.

That said, time will tell if that remains true. According to Joel Erickson, Ballard says the team understands that trading Richardson is still a possibility.

Richardson requested the trade back in late February, but a market never developed. He was with the team for the majority of offseason programs and took part in the on-field work during OTAs and minicamp. Richardson is currently competing with Riley Leonard for the backup role.

Ballard says his intention right now is to keep all 3 QBs: Jones, Richardson, Leonard.

As The Athletic's James Boyd noted recently, there could be a "soft deadline" for getting a deal done early on in training camp. On the third day of training camp, Richardson is due a $4.2 million roster bonus. If Richardson remains on the team up to that point and the Colts pay that bonus, any team could then acquire Richardson and only owe him $1.1 million for the 2026 season.

This could help faciliate a trade, particularly if Richardson performs well during the preseason.
