Chicago White Sox Struggle Again in Defeat to Yankees

NEW YORK — In a challenging matchup, the Chicago White Sox faced another disappointing outcome on Wednesday night, falling to the New York Yankees 10-5. On a brighter note, shortstop Luisangel Acuña was not asked to step onto the mound, having pitched during a previous 12-2 defeat on Tuesday. The anticipated early-season clash between two first-place teams has turned into a showcase of the Yankees' dominance over the Sox.

“Really just kind of a relentless effort by them, and we didn’t have any answers for them,” expressed White Sox manager Will Venable after the game. As the series continues, Sean Burke will take the mound on Thursday in hopes of preventing a sweep, following left-handed opener Bryan Hudson.

The Yankees have certainly made their mark, outscoring the Sox 22-7 in the first two games at Yankee Stadium. Adding to the White Sox's woes, they have now lost nine consecutive games at this venue since June 8, 2023, and their overall record against the Yankees stands at a dismal 2-13 since the start of 2024.

Despite the loss, Colson Montgomery shone for the Sox, hitting two home runs and driving in four runs. However, Anthony Kay struggled early, giving up four runs in just two innings. The White Sox's starting pitching has been underwhelming lately, with only one starter, Davis Martin, managing to go over five innings in the past nine games.

Injuries added to the team's challenges, as reliever Sean Newcomb and center fielder Everson Pereira were both forced to exit. Newcomb was struck in the left triceps by a hard-hit ball but reported it was just a charley horse. Pereira, meanwhile, collided with the outfield wall while making a notable catch and was evaluated for concussion symptoms. He mentioned, “That’s what we’re here for,” emphasizing the need to support each other even in tough situations.

Cody Bellinger propelled the Yankees into the lead with a two-run home run in the first inning, while Kay noted his misfortune, attributing his struggles to the design of the ballpark. Bellinger had a strong performance, going 3-for-4 with a walk and adding to his impressive season stats. As the game progressed, the Yankees continued to build their lead, with Paul Goldschmidt hitting a decisive three-run home run later on.

“These last two have been tough,” Venable acknowledged, but he praised his team's determination. Without significant improvements in pitching, however, the White Sox will likely face an uphill battle as they aim for a competitive season in 2026.
