Contract details for new NMSU women's basketball coach Adeniyi Amadou

New Mexico State moved swiftly to find its next women's basketball coach, announcing Adeniyi Amadou's hire just three days after former coach Jody Adams was fired on March 8.

Amadou was officially introduced as the new Aggies' coach on March 13 at the Pan American Center, and he and several others at NM State signed his contract from March 14-17. Aggies athletic director Joe Fields, deputy AD for internal operations and Senior Woman Administrator Molly Tye, and Associate General Counsel Isaiah Herrera all signed it on March 14. Amadou and NM State President Valerio Ferme signed it on March 17.

Salary and length of deal

Amadou signed a five-year deal that expires on March 16, 2031. He will be paid $200,000 annually, which has no increases from year to year. This is $25,000 more than what NM State was paying Adams.

The contract's start date stated it would be on March 16, 2026, or the day after his last day of employment with Rhode Island, where he was an assistant coach before the Aggies hired him. Amadou remained with the Rams through their NCAA Tournament run, meaning his contract officially began on March 22 after URI lost to Alabama in the first round the previous day.

Bonus money

Amadou can earn 17 potential bonuses, 12 of which are performance-based and five of which are academic-based.

Among the most notable performance-based incentives are $5,000 for winning a conference regular-season championship, another $5,000 for winning a conference tournament and another $5,000 for winning a conference's Coach of the Year award. He will also earn $1,000 for every win against a Power Four conference team.

If Amadou guides NM State to its first-ever NCAA Tournament win, he'll earn $7,000 for reaching the second round.

Money for assistants

Amadou has been given $320,000 to hire assistant coaches and staff members. One new assistant coach, Asami Morita, has been announced at the time of writing. She was the head coach at Division II Westminster (Utah) from 2023-26 and was previously an assistant coach with Nevada, Robert Morris, the Shiga Lakestars (a professional men's basketball team in Japan's B.League) and Arizona Western College.

Voluntary exit

If Amadou voluntarily chooses to end his NM State tenure before the end of his contract, he'll have to pay 50% of his base salary from the date of termination to March 16, 2031, in "non-penalty liquidated damages".
