Cooper Cooke Shines at Dutton Ranch Darby Xtreme Bareback Event
As the ProRodeo season intensifies, every earned dollar becomes increasingly crucial for competitors aiming to qualify for the 2026 National Finals Rodeo. Among the key events for bareback riders is the Dutton Ranch Darby Xtreme Bareback, a premier competition that offers a significant opportunity to improve standings ahead of the bustling summer schedule.
The Darby Xtreme Bareback is celebrated as one of the most thrilling rodeo contests, now recognized as the most lucrative standalone bareback riding event globally. This year, 30 elite PRCA bareback riders vied for a total purse of $60,000, attracting a deep pool of talent, including NFR qualifiers, world champions, and emerging contenders eager to secure their first trip to Las Vegas.
Kade Sonnier dominated the initial round with an impressive 88-point ride on Queen Scarlet from Pickett Pro Rodeo Co. Following closely were Tanner Aus, Clayton Biglow, Cooper Filipek, and Cole Reiner, who all scored 87 points. Kashton Ford and the 2022 World Champion, Jess Pope, made it to the finals with rides of 86.5 points, while both Cooper Cooke and 2023 World Champion Keenan Hayes rounded out the finalists with 86-point rides.
When the final round concluded, it was Cooper Cooke who emerged victorious. Known for his ability to perform under pressure with two prior NFR qualifications, the Idaho cowboy delivered a stunning 91-point ride on J Bar J's No Show Reiner, earning nearly $14,000. Cooke's triumph propelled him from 14th to 11th in the world standings, showcasing the growing opportunities for bareback riders this season.
Furthermore, Cooke's success at the Darby Xtreme Bareback keeps him in contention for the newly introduced Big Sky Xtreme Bareback bonus, which offers a $100,000 reward for any competitor who wins both the Darby Xtreme Bareback and the Riggin Masters event in Billings, MT, later this October. As the list of qualifiers for the 2026 NFR begins to take shape, the excitement and unpredictability of the rodeo season continue to build.
