Cowboys Secure Former Chargers NT Otito Ogbonnia for Defensive Reinforcement

The Dallas Cowboys have taken a significant step to bolster their defensive line, responding to new defensive coordinator Christian Parker's vision for the team. Parker, who has experience in building strong secondaries from his time in Philadelphia and Denver, has prioritized enhancing the interior defense, even as the team made notable moves in the safety positions during free agency and the draft.

Joining the Cowboys is nose tackle Otito Ogbonnia, who brings valuable experience to a position that has been a challenge for the team in recent years. Despite the presence of standout players like Quinnen Williams and Kenny Clark, Dallas identified a need for a substantial nose tackle, particularly for critical situations such as goal-line stands. Ogbonnia, at 6-foot-4 and 320 pounds, fits the bill and aims to make a significant impact after a part-time role with the Chargers.

Ogbonnia, a 25-year-old from Houston, Texas, was drafted in the fifth round (No. 180) in 2022 and signed a one-year deal with the Cowboys worth $2.75 million. His career earnings total $4.2 million, according to Over The Cap. Throughout his four seasons, he has started 20 of 41 games, including all 17 in 2024, though he has only recorded 0.5 sacks. His run defense performance has shown consistent improvement, increasing from a score of 41.9 in his rookie year to 56.3 in 2025.

The Cowboys have struggled to fill the nose tackle position adequately, with last year’s late-round pick Jay Toia seeing minimal action and their first-round pick Mazi Smith not meeting expectations. With Clark set to start, adding Ogbonnia provides the Cowboys with a larger, experienced option to handle critical short-yardage situations, and if he thrives, he may secure a long-term spot in Dallas.
