David Benavidez is reportedly in “advanced” negotiations to take on Noel Mikaelian in a cruiserweight unification bout. This update comes on the heels of the WBC mandating that Mikaelian defend his title against Benavidez, which is a somewhat unusual move for sanctioning bodies to initiate a unification fight.

Benavidez, boasting an impressive record of 32 wins and no losses, along with 26 knockouts, made his cruiserweight debut earlier this month by dominating Zurdo Ramirez to capture the WBA and WBO championships, thus marking his status as a three-division world champion. Meanwhile, Mikaelian, who is 28-3 with 12 knockouts, reclaimed the WBC title from Badou Jack in a rematch last December.

While Mikaelian is a capable fighter, many observers believe he may struggle to pose a significant threat to the formidable Benavidez. A conversation reportedly took place between Sampson Lewkowicz from Benavidez’s camp and promoter Don King, highlighting the complexities of negotiations, especially given King’s notorious reputation over the past 15 years.

Despite these challenges, the backing of the WBC lends credibility to the potential matchup, making it seem increasingly likely. Fans are left wondering if this unification fight will be a worthwhile spectacle, especially if more significant opportunities elude Benavidez.
