‘Disgusting’: Caitlin Clark sparks outrage for screaming in referee’s face

Indiana Fever superstar Caitlin Clark has never been one to hide her frustration with officiating during games, even if it means confronting referees face-to-face with rather heated interactions. She did exactly that again on Wednesday night.

During the Fever’s matchup against the Golden State Valkyries, Clark was seen screaming directly at an official after what she believed to be a missed foul call on a play that sent her crashing to the floor and left her shaken up.

The incident quickly sparked widespread outrage from the WNBA community as Clark faced heavy criticism for her antics.

Clark Screams at Referee

In the second quarter of Wednesday night’s contest, Clark drove to the basket and attempted a layup, where she was challenged by Valkyries center Kiah Stokes. Stokes appeared to make contact with Clark’s arm, causing the Fever star to hit the floor, but the officials let play continue without calling a foul.

Clark appeared to be in some discomfort after the play, getting to her feet slowly before limping back on defense. When play was stopped moments later, she headed to the bench and then made her way to the locker room, though not before voicing her frustration with the officiating crew in a rather direct way.

At the next stoppage in play after what she believed to be a missed foul, Clark erupted at the officials.

The Fever superstar flung her arms into the air, walked toward one of the referees, and screamed directly into the official’s face. Although the broadcast did not capture what was said, her message seemed pretty clear even to amateur lip-readers.

‘This is getting old’

Needless to say, Clark’s outburst did not go over well with WNBA fans, especially since she was not given a technical foul by the referees.

“I’ve been saying it for weeks but there was absolutely a directive handed down to not give Caitlin techs. There aint a ref alive with an ego small enough to allow this unless they were explicitly told to lol,” one fan wrote in a post on X.

“How this was not a tech is beyond me,” someone else wrote.

“Getting calls or not, I feel like having this kind of emotion built up every game not good for the mentals (or your game). She gotta get a sports psychologist or something to help navigate this. Don’t need to move like Draymond every night,” another fan added.

“Nah this is nasty,” a fan wrote.

“Girl this is getting old. Also refs need to stop being scared and give her a tech like they would do to anyone else if they did this,” a commenter wrote.

“CC gets a separate set of rules and it’s disgusting,” a fan commented.

“She can really do whatever she wants. I see why she acts like this,” someone else added.

“Players have gotten techs for clapping btw,” another fan said.

“Any other player that his would be a tech,” someone else wrote.

“She could punch a ref directly in the face and still not get a tech,” another fan commented.

This is certainly not the first time Clark has been seen passionately arguing with officials, and it’s unlikely to be the last. However, it was not well received by fans.
