The Miami Marlins may have the best pitcher in baseball right now in Sandy Alcantara. Many wrote him off after a disappointing 2025 season, but that came on the heels of an injury. So far in 2026, he has already become the first starter to throw a complete game.

“Sandy Alcantara threw the first complete game of the MLB season in a 93-pitch shutout to lead the Miami Marlins over the Chicago White Sox 10-0 on Wednesday,” ESPN wrote.

On Tuesday night, Alcantara nearly accomplished the same feat against the Cincinnati Reds but was pulled by his manager with two outs remaining.

“Sandy Alcantara took the mound in the top of the ninth inning with a 2–0 lead, aiming to become the fourth pitcher in Marlins franchise history to record back-to-back complete-game shutouts. After surrendering a double and a walk, manager Clayton McCullough made his most controversial move of the young season, removing his ace in favor of Anthony Bender,” Fish on First’s Kevin Barral wrote.

Alcantara’s dominance early in the season has also caused his trade value to skyrocket. One team to watch as a potential suitor is the Los Angeles Dodgers.

“Alcántara has been at the subject of trade rumors for years. Miami held onto him rather than flipping him for pennies on the dollar. It looks like the right call. Alcántara missed the 2024 season and then was a bit rusty in 2025. Now, he's fully back. Alcántara has made three starts and has a 0.74 ERA in a league-leading 24 1/3 innings pitched to go along with an 18-to-4 strikeout-to-walk ratio. In three starts this season, he has pitched seven innings, nine innings and 8 1/3 innings. He's on a bit of an insane run and looks like the guy who won the Cy Young Award in 2022,” SI’s Patrick McAvoy wrote.

The Dodgers already boast one of the best rotations in baseball, but there have still been some inconsistencies. Alcantara, who is on a $56 million deal, would give Los Angeles another elite arm and potentially elevate an already dangerous pitching staff.

Alcantara won the Cy Young Award in 2022 and appears to be returning to that form early this season. While there is still a long way to go, he is exactly the type of frontline starter the Dodgers could target.
