Eagles stars will keep close eye on Devon Witherspoon contract talks

In borrowing from a recent Denver Post article, the Eagles have their own 'Champagne Problems' at the cornerback position. A phrase used to describe trivial, first-world, or "high-class" grievances, the Eagles have amassed the best cornerback trio in the NFL, and if they all play well, they'll seek elite compensation. Quinyon Mitchell and Cooper DeJean do not need new contracts yet, but they have every reason to pay attention to the cornerback market.

That market is moving quickly, and two of the next dominoes could directly affect the Philadelphia Eagles. Seattle Seahawks star Devon Witherspoon and New England Patriots standout Christian Gonzalez are both in line for new deals, and their negotiations could help define what Mitchell and DeJean will eventually cost.

The top of the market has already changed. Trent McDuffie landed a four-year, $124 million extension from the Los Angeles Rams after being acquired from the Kansas City Chiefs, a deal that made him the NFL’s highest-paid cornerback at $31 million per season. Sauce Gardner and Derek Stingley Jr. are also at or near $30 million annually, creating a new financial tier for elite young defensive backs.

Witherspoon could be next. According to Pro Football Talk, via Ian Rapoport, the Seahawks have offered a deal that would pay Witherspoon “upwards of $30 million” annually. Gonzalez, who is scheduled to make $2.259 million this season, is also expected to command a major extension. The 2023 first-round pick already has a second-team All-Pro selection, a Pro Bowl nod and one of the strongest young cornerback résumés in football.

That matters in Philadelphia because Mitchell and DeJean are not far behind, if not ahead based on 2025 stats.

Mitchell has already emerged as one of the league’s best outside cornerbacks. According to Next Gen Stats, he led all NFL cornerbacks in catch rate allowed at 42.4 percent and average target separation at 1.8 yards among players with at least 60 targets. He also ranked near the top of the league in tight windows forced, yards after catch allowed per reception, passer rating allowed and forced incompletions. He did not allow a touchdown in more than 600 coverage snaps.

DeJean’s situation is different but just as important. Because he slipped into the second round of the 2024 NFL Draft, the Eagles do not have a fifth-year option to extend team control. He is entering the third season of a four-year, $9.28 million rookie deal, which means Philadelphia may have to move sooner than it would with a first-round pick. DeJean’s All-Pro production, slot value and versatility could allow him to blow past the three-year, $40 million deal Kyler Gordon signed with the Chicago Bears.

The Eagles’ problem is not whether Mitchell and DeJean are worth paying. It is whether they can afford to keep an elite secondary together once the market settles. Mitchell could push beyond $34 million per season if Witherspoon or Gonzalez resets the market again. DeJean may not reach the same number as a slot-heavy defensive back, but his value could easily climb into the $20 million-plus range if he continues producing at an All-Pro level. Philadelphia also has Riq Woolen on a one-year deal, giving the Eagles an elite cornerback trio in the short term but a more complicated long-term picture.

This is why the Witherspoon and Gonzalez negotiations matter. Their deals will not involve the Eagles, but they could establish the numbers Philadelphia must eventually confront. Every new contract near the top of the market becomes evidence for the next agent. Every guarantee pushes the position forward. Every elite young corner who signs before Mitchell and DeJean raises the floor.

The Eagles have built one of the NFL’s best young secondaries. Mitchell is already a true outside eraser. DeJean gives Vic Fangio rare flexibility from the slot and in base packages. Together, they give Philadelphia a foundation most teams spend years trying to find.

The next question is whether the Eagles can keep that foundation intact once the cornerback market catches up.

For now, Mitchell and DeJean can focus on training camp. Their agents, however, will be watching Seattle and New England closely.
