Emma Raducanu Reaches Quarter-Finals as Katie Boulter Shocks Top Seed at Queen’s
British tennis shone brightly on Friday at the HSBC Championships in London, highlighted by Katie Boulter's impressive upset of top seed Elena Rybakina, securing her place in the semi-finals. Emma Raducanu also advanced to the quarter-finals after a successful day of matches that followed a complete washout on Thursday.
Raducanu, the champion of the 2021 US Open, earned her spot in the last eight for the second year in a row with a convincing 6-4, 6-2 victory over Sorana Cirstea from Romania. This win marked her first success against a top-20 opponent since she triumphed over Daria Kasatkina in Strasbourg in 2025. However, her quarter-final match against Uzbekistan's Kamilla Rakhimova was postponed due to the packed schedule.
The delay was a direct result of Boulter's marathon battle against Rybakina, which lasted two hours and 39 minutes. Boulter, currently ranked 73rd by the WTA, achieved her most significant victory by ranking, overcoming Rybakina, who is ranked second in the world, with a score of 7-5, 2-6, 6-4. Boulter displayed remarkable resilience, saving eight break points in the first set and a total of 11 throughout the match.
Rybakina, the reigning Australian Open and 2022 Wimbledon champion, had faced a tough match earlier in the day against Tatjana Maria before her clash with Boulter. Although she performed well in the second set, the crowd rallied behind the local favorite Boulter as daylight faded. Boulter had previously sealed a swift victory over Jaqueline Cristian, giving her the stamina to elevate her game and finish the match on a high note.
Boulter is set to face Croatian player Donna Vekic in the semi-finals, while Raducanu's rescheduled match will determine her next opponent, Iva Jovic. Meanwhile, fellow British player Harriet Dart faced defeat in a closely contested match, losing 5-7, 6-1, 7-5 after a brief medical timeout.
