ESPN updates Michigan football 2027 recruiting ranking
Michigan football recruiting in the 2027 class has somewhat quieted, as the Wolverines now have 20 pledges and just a few targets remaining.
The maize and blue lost out on five-star cornerback Joshua Dobson, who opted to stay home and commit to South Carolina, but they did manage to woo four-star corner Monsanna Torbert away from Ohio State, despite being an Ohio native. On Saturday, the Wolverines hope to land four-star offensive lineman Lincoln Mageo from Oceanside, California, as he makes his decision public.
With 20 commitments in the class, ESPN updated Michigan's recruiting ranking, and the last time we checked in (but not the last time ESPN updated its rankings), the Wolverines were a top 10 team. However, at the moment, Michigan checks in at No. 11 overall.
Previous ranking: 11
SC Next 300 commits: 13Top offensive prospect: QB Kamden LopatiTop defensive prospect: CB Tavares Harrington
Michigan begins a new era under Kyle Whittingham, who tapped into his Utah roots to land his quarterback in this cycle. Kamden Lopati, out of West HS in Salt Lake City, has demonstrated a high football IQ and sees the field well while possessing a strong arm and good mobility. A potential key target for Lopati is WR Quentin Burrell, a big, physical receiver with good speed and body control from nearby Illinois. The offense should also benefit from the addition of SC Next 300 TE Colt Lumpris, a flip from Alabama. He possesses a big frame (6-foot-6, 240 pounds) and can be a tough matchup for defenses as he runs well and can use his size to make contested catches. All three players rose up the board in the June SC Next 300 update.
Tyson Robinson, a running back out of Mississippi, gives this class another offensive weapon to build on. He has good power and vision and demonstrated great effort and coachability during multiple in-person evaluations. To help protect their offensive skill additions, the Wolverines have landed several OLs, including SC Next 300 prospects Sidney Rouleau and Jakari Lipsey as well as Louis Esposito, who has made noticeable strides over the past year in build and execution and was OL MVP at the Under Armour Chicago camp tour stop.
The maize and blue are the third-ranked Big Ten team in ESPN's rankings, behind No. 4 Oregon and No. 6 Ohio State. It does not appear that, barring a player re-rank, Michigan will land a five-star this cycle. Even so, there are some high-profile commits in the class, including quarterback Kamden Lopati, safety Tavares Harrington, tackle Jakari Lipsey, the aforementioned Monsanna Torbert, and others. The Wolverines do have a top-notch receiver, in Quentin Burrell, and hope to flip Dakota Guerrant from Oregon with a solid offensive showing this season.
