Ferran Torres seemingly mocks Donald Trump with ‘Make Spain Great Again’ at FIFA World Cup parade
Ferran Torres bagged the winner for Spain in the FIFA World Cup final, and used the parade to make a statement against Donald Trump.
Spain were presented the World Cup trophy by Trump, who was then at the centre of an awkward moment as he refused to leave the Spanish National Team’s trophy-raising moment.
It appears this, along with some other moments of controversy throughout the tournament, has not sat well with Ferran Torres, as the Barcelona star took his chance at the parade to mock the current US President.
Ferran Torres sports Donald Trump parody cap with ‘Make Spain Great Again’ embroidery
After the FIFA World Cup concluded, the Spanish National Team were given the customary heroes’ welcome when they returned to Madrid.
As is tradition, the Spanish National Team held a parade to celebrate their monumental victory. During the parade, Torres could be seen sporting a red baseball cap that read ‘Make Spain Great Again.’
The cap was an obvious parody of the red ‘Make America Great Again’ caps that are associated with Donald Trump, who coined the slogan as part of both his 2016 and 2024 Presidential campaigns.
Given the highly scrutinised nature of Trump’s involvement in the FIFA World Cup, including the trophy ceremony, it is very likely that Torres is taking a dig at the 45th and 47th President of the United States.
Donald Trump involvement with FIFA World Cup highly criticised
Donald Trump has been visibly involved with the FIFA World Cup throughout the tournament, but his involvement goes way back.
Trump spearheaded the United States’ bid for the tournament back in 2017 and was instrumental in making sure that the bid was successful.
Since then, FIFA has presented him with the inaugural FIFA Peace Prize, a move that garnered a lot of criticism from fans and officials around the world.
Of course, the most notable incident came earlier this summer, when Trump reportedly influenced FIFA to overturn Folarin Balogun’s ban in time for their Round of 16 tie against Belgium.
Many saw it as Trump leveraging his political and financial power over FIFA president Gianni Infantino to give the USMNT an edge.
While the USMNT didn’t win with Balogun on the field, many felt that Trump and the USMNT had violated the spirit and ethical code of the game and the tournament.
