Virat Kohli's landmark 300th ODI arrives on what could be his last England tour

Virat Kohli steps into what may well be his farewell ODI tour of England when India take on the hosts in the series opener at Edgbaston on Tuesday. 

It will be his 00th ODI in a storied career and ahead of the contest, England head coach Brendon McCullum offered warm words for Kohli, calling him one of the sport's finest ambassadors and someone whose impact will continue to be felt long after he eventually retires.

In a video shared by ECB, McCullum, who spent a season alongside Kohli in the Royal Challengers Bengaluru dressing room during the IPL, spoke fondly of his intense competitive streak and the way he throws himself fully into every contest. 

"I had the privilege of playing with him for a year at RCB. I got to share the dressing room with him, got to know him and thoroughly enjoyed his company. He's a highly competitive person and leaves nothing out on the field. He plays with all his heart and is an immense cricketer," McCullum said.

Still, McCullum couldn't resist a joke that he'd still prefer Kohli score nothing this series, even while wishing him well and praising him as a true champion of the game.

"I'd still want him to make no runs in this series! But we wish him well. He's a fierce competitor and an absolute champion," he laughed. 

However, he soon hailed Kohli as a cricketer who has drawn entire generations toward the sport and grown into a figure recognised well beyond cricket's usual boundaries, likening his global appeal to that of a celebrity.

"He's inspired generations of people to love cricket. He's one of those players who transcends the sport. He's become a real rockstar, not just in cricket or India, but around the world and across different sports. When his time is up, his legacy will live on long after he's played the game," he added.

India seek redemption after T20I struggles

India are are looking to put a difficult T20I campaign behind them after suffering a complete 4-0 series defeat in the shorter format.

With senior campaigners like Kohli and Rohit Sharma back in the fold, the visitors will be eager to lay down a strong marker early in their build-up toward the 2027 ODI World Cup, using this series as an opportunity to reset momentum and restore some confidence within the squad.

Kohli has just one century to his name in England but 12 half-centuries. He is chasing Sachin Tendulkar's record of 100 centuries and a couple in this series will be a major boost to his ambitions. 

Meanwhile, he needs just 68 more runs to overtake Rahul Dravid and become India's all-time leading run-scorer in ODIs played on English soil.
