Is Caitlin Clark in the WNBA 3-point contest this year?
Caitlin Clark will start her third All-Star game next weekend. Clark finished second among guards in fan voting, but what made headlines was the fact that she ranked the 11th best guard in the league by the players.
One place you probably won’t see Clark next weekend is competing in the WNBA 3-Point Contest. Clark, whose long range shooting made her a star in college, has not participated in the contest in either of her first two All-Star weekends. Presumably she would turn down the invite this year too, but the truth is the league shouldn’t bother asking. Not because she would say no, but because she doesn’t deserve to be involved.
Clark shot .377 on 10.4 three-point attempts per game in her four seasons at Iowa. In her senior year she attempted 13.6 three-pointers a game and made 38% of them. For comparison’s sake, Stephen Curry made 38.7% of 9.9 attempts per game in his final season at Davidson.

So far, her shooting has not translated to the WNBA. Clark is just a career 32.7% three-point shooter midway through her third season in the league. Last year in 13 games she shot a pitiful 27.9% from three. This year she’s at 32% on a career-low 7.4 attempts per game. And she’s going through a brutal stretch right now
She was 1-of-8 from three in a loss to the Valkyries on Wednesday night. She’s just 3-of-19 from deep over the last three games since returning from injury. She’s only made 50% of her three-point attempts three times in 20 games this season.
Clark is currently the sixth best three-point shooter on her own team.

More deserving Fever players
Aliyah Boston leads the WNBA right now, connecting on 46.8% of her 2.8 attempts per game. Sophie Cunningham is second in the league, making 43.8% of 4.8 attempts per game. And the most impressive shooting performance on the Fever is Kelsey Mitchell who is making 41.6% of 6.4 attempts a game. Mitchell has the fifth best three-point shooting percentage in the WNBA on the sixth most attempts this season.
Mitchell deserves to be involved without a question and if the WNBA really wants a combination of star power and great shooting then they should invite Sophie Cunningham too. Clark doesn’t deserve to be anywhere near the contest.
There was a time when people dreamed of Clark competing at NBA All-Star weekend like Sabrina Ionescu did when she shot against Stephen Curry in ’24.

Now, finally for some good news for Clark: Ionescu is shooting 28% from three this season on 6.1 attempts a game.
Despite the poor shooting from Clark, she’s still seventh in scoring at 19.7 points a game and second in the league with 7.7 assists per game. It’s also worth noting that they are tied for the fifth best recording in the WNBA right now and on pace for their best record since Clark was drafted.
Clark may not be a deserving face of the league right now, but she’s still very good despite shooting horribly. She’s a legitimate All-Star but doesn’t belong anywhere near the three-point contest.
