Ja'Kobi Gillespie debuts with Spurs in NBA California Classic
Miami defeated San Antonio, 88-87, Friday in the NBA Summer League California Classic at Chase Center in San Francisco, California.
Former Tennessee basketball player Ja'Kobi Gillespie started and played 29 minutes for the Spurs. He totaled 10 points, eight assists, four rebounds and three steals. Gillespie converted 3-of-17 field goal attempts, 2-of-8 three-point attempts and 1-of-1 two-point free throw attempts.
Miles Kelly led San Antonio in scoring with 16 points, while RJ Davis totaled 15 points. Jahmir Young and Ryan Conwell led all scorers for Miami with 21 points each.
Gillespie was selected by San Antonio in the second round of the 2026 NBA draft (No. 42 overall).
He played one year for the Vols and appeared in 37 games (37 starts). The former Vol holds the program's single-season record for steals (79). Gillespie also recorded 201 assists and converted 103 three-point attempts. He was the first Vol to score 650 points and record 200 assists in a season.
Former Vols Zakai Zeigler and Igor Milicic Jr., both on the Spurs' summer League roster, did not play due to a coach's decision.
San Antonio will next play Sunday versus Golden State Gold. Tipoff is slated for 7 p.m. EDT at Chase Center.
